Starting Friday, October 16, players who digitally pre-ordered Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 get early access to the campaign — a full week before the game's October 23 launch. It's a narrower perk than it might sound: only the campaign unlocks early, and only for a specific slice of buyers. Here's exactly who qualifies and what you're actually getting a week ahead of everyone else.
What unlocks October 16 — and what doesn't
Campaign early access is limited to digital pre-orders of the Standard Digital Edition or the Vault Edition, confirmed directly on Call of Duty's official blog. Physical pre-orders don't count — if you reserved a boxed copy at retail, you wait for October 23 like everyone else. The perk is available across every platform the game ships on: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, Battle.net, Steam, and Nintendo Switch 2.
Multiplayer and the returning DMZ mode stay locked for the full week, regardless of edition. Early access is campaign-only. Modern Warfare 4 also isn't a day-one Xbox Game Pass title, so subscribers hoping to play through the service won't have a path in on October 16 either — Game Pass access, if and when it happens, follows later.
A feature that skipped two games
Campaign early access isn't new to the series, but it's been absent for a while. Activision last offered it for Modern Warfare 3 back in 2023, then dropped it for the two Call of Duty releases that followed. Its return here is as much a signal about this campaign specifically as it is a pre-order incentive — publishers typically reserve early access pushes for story content they're confident will hold up to a week of public reaction before the wider multiplayer launch.
The campaign itself follows Private Park, a South Korean soldier experiencing live combat for the first time, as a full-scale invasion from North Korea forces his unit into a fighting retreat through collapsing cities. It's a tighter, more grounded premise than the globe-spanning plots recent entries have leaned on, and early access effectively turns pre-order customers into the first wave of public reaction before reviews or wider playthroughs shape the conversation.
What it means before October 23
A week of campaign-only access is a meaningful head start if the story is what you're after, but it doesn't preview anything about multiplayer balance, Warzone, or the Ground War maps — all of that stays behind the October 23 wall regardless of pre-order status. If you want a sense of what's coming on that front, our breakdown of what the open beta revealed covers the maps, modes, and the surprise early look at Warzone's new Resurgence map that the beta already showed off. Full early access terms are on Call of Duty's official blog.
Modern Warfare 4 launches in full on October 23, 2026, on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, Battle.net, Steam, and Nintendo Switch 2. Between now and then, campaign early access is the only way in — and only for digital pre-order customers of the Standard Digital or Vault Edition.
